Debian History

Some details:

• Debian started in August of 1993 by Ian Murdock, student at Purdue U.  It was initially sponsored by FSF.
• The name is a contraction of the names Ian and Debra Murdock.  Dee-Bee-Un is incorrect pronunciation!
• The package system began early on in the project.
• There are about 2000 packages available in version 2.1.
• Debian is currently comprised of about 300 developers around the world.  Few of the developers have actually met in person.
• The current version of Debian is 2.1, code named Slink.  All code names have come from the movie Toy Story.
