Debian History

Debian started in August of 1993 by Ian Murdock, student at Purdue U.
It was initially sponsored by FSF.

The name is a contraction of the names Ian and Debra Murdock. Dee-Bee-Un
is incorrect pronunciation!

The package system began early on in the project.

There are about 2000 packages available in version 2.1.

Debian is currently comprised of about 300 developers around the world.
Few of the developers have actually met in person.

The current version of Debian is 2.1, code named Slink. All code
names have come from the movie Toy Story.
